Cruise ship worker shares what to do if vessel sinks | Cruise | Travel
Cruises are considered one of the safest modes of transportation, designed to withstand all kinds of mishaps at sea. However, like any mode of transport, there is a remote possibility of an accident, which is why cruise crew members receive extensive training to handle an evacuation.
This topic was discussed by YouTuber Luli, known as “Luli de los Cruceros” on her channel with nearly 60,000 subscribers. In one of her latest videos, she lifted the lid on some of the safety protocols on board.
The crew member, who has worked as a photographer on various ships, detailed evacuation procedures and what to do in an emergency.
This includes what happens if the ship sinks – and in this situation you should always follow the orders of crew members as they have been well-drilled.
According to Luli, “ships are like a floating city” where everything is carefully calculated to react to any dangerous situation.
She assures that the onboard staff receives exhaustive training to face different situations – from fires to completely evacuating the ship. In her online video, she explained: “The crew knows exactly where they should be and what they should do in case of an emergency…
“My emergency card indicates exactly what I should do in case of evacuation, even the boat or raft where I should be.”
Luli revealed that one of the drills involves using a “vertical slide” to evacuate the crew in emergencies. This system, known as a “marine evacuation system,” allows crew members to quickly descend into the water safely.
She added: “It’s an effective way to evacuate many people in a short time and safely.” To make sure everyone is primed on this procedure, weekly drills are conducted.
Luli emphasises the importance of these regular exercises, noting that “it’s essential to be prepared” so that any crew member can act quickly in case of an accident.
Although the chances of sinking or an accident are minimal, preparation and coordination are essential on cruises. According to Luli, these trainings ensure that the crew remains in a constant state of alert and knows how to act to protect passengers and themselves.
If you find yourself in the rare situation where a vessel is sinking, always stay calm and follow the instruction of crew members on board.
